Hilarious black comedy

I saw this at the London Film Festival what feels like an age ago and have been hunting for it on dvd ever since. Finally its here. Relentless madness and surreal tangents abound in a film which makes me want to describe it as typically Belgian, though I'm far from qualified to make such a statement, and make it only with the memory of 1992's Man Bites Dog which remains somewhere near the top of my living room dvd stack. Benoit Poelvoorde, the star of that movie, takes on a small but memorable role in Louise-Michel, a film that is essentially a revenge movie about factory workers who come into work one morning to find they factory closed down and the manager gone, and who gather to plot their revenge only to find that 'Louise' has an idea of her own - pool their redundancy money and hire a hit-man. Let the road movie begin! Not until we meet the other half of our eponymous duo of course - the blundering 'Michel' - a security specialist who's ideas are always better than his execution. I haven't seen or read anything about this movie for about three years now so you'll forgive the broad-brush plot summary but I simply cannot recommend this movie enough to anyone with a genuinely dark, zany sense of humour and a particular liking for its continental form.

a gem of a movie

I agree whole heartedly with what the previous reviewer wrote so I wont repeat him.I would like to add that I do have first hand experience of Belgium having lived there 21 years. I also have man bites dog in my top films of all times, hilarious but dark, dark, dark.Polvoerde seems to capture the essence of this weird little country and delivers it perfectly in this hilarious and surreal black comedy.Yolande Moreau is outstanding as Louise, an illiterate factory worker.I discovered her in 'Seraphine' the true story of a naive untrained French artist at the beginning of the 20th century. It is after seeing this film that I researched her other roles and discovered Louise Michel.
